The Fifteen (#6)

Writer's picture: Mark RoseMark Rose

repeat…over the course of the final fifteen days of 2009,   i’m going to let you in on fifteen things that need to change in my life in the coming year.   fifteen decisions that i am making that reflect things that are important to me.

i’m going to go waaay out on a limb.   i’m going to give you my best shot at honest transparency, in an attempt to be held accountable.  some things will be  about my spiritual journey…others are simply improvements to the life i walk.   either way, they are important to me…and here’s the next one on the list:

change number six

one of the coolest things that is happening around north point these days is seeing all of the new people who are coming.  there is seldom a sunday that we don’t have brand new people coming to join us.

over the past nine months, we have had over 50 new people begin to call north point home.

we are averaging nearly 100 new “hits” on our church website each week.  there is a tremendous word of mouth thing happening.  for the first time ever in our history,  north point people seem to be genuinely excited about inviting friends.

so here’s where i need to make some improvement:  i’ve got to work harder on remembering names!

there is nothing that shows we are really paying attention to meeting someone new more than remembering their name.  nothing.

in fact, there aren’t a whole lot of things that show we really care,  more than meeting new people and remembering their names.

remembering names requires listening.  it requires focus.  it requires a determination to do it.

i really love meeting new people and finding out their stories.  i wasn’t always this way.   i’m not an extrovert by nature.   but some things have changed through the years.  i have grown to see the importance of connecting with new people, if i really claim to care about their lives.

meeting new people and remembering their names is pretty much where the rubber begins to meet the road in kingdom work.  we can say we care about the needs of people.   we can say we are interested in people connecting with god.   but without this simple action,  i’m not sure we’ll even get to the more important stuff.

so if you see me carrying around a pen and a small card in my back pocket,  that means i’m using it to write down people’s names after i meet them…and then using it during the week to work on remembering those names.

what about you?  any interest in trying harder to remember people’s names?
