The odds of me changing

Writer's picture: Mark RoseMark Rose

as i said last week, before i got to the climactic ending of my “fifteen for 2010”,  i posted a few other changes i’ve been contemplating, but hadn’t fully committed to…yet.

in thinking them through, i realized that some of them have no realistic chance of being fulfilled…while others are serious contenders.

so in the spirit of harmless wagering, i thought i’d give you the odds on each one of actually happening.  bear in mind that these are just the “opening lines” in vegas.  they could change as the year moves on.

  1. joining a jack bauer fan club. (really good odds.  5 to 1.   i’m a true “bauerhead”.   can’t wait for january 17th.)

  2. completely blowing away my facebook page…really, there’s just something creepy about people who don’t really want to be my friend asking to friend me.  (actually the odds are not very good.  i’m a voyeur at heart.   i won’t ever write much, but i do like to read what other’s write…once a month, or so.   100 to 1 )

  3. letting my head hair grow out… just to see what it looks like.   (what was i thinking?  ain’t gonna happen.  1000 to 1 )

  4. driving off-road more in my jeep.   (bet the house!  this one is in the bank!   2 to 1 )

  5. running for a position on the school board…or stop complaining about what i see and hear.   (as frustrated as i am that there is no one who actually lives in lewisville on the lewisville school board,  i don’t have the time or the urge to enter politics.   don’t bet on this one.  500 to 1 )

  6. teaching myself how to play lead guitaras in screaming stevie ray vaughn solos.  you really ought to see me in my dreams…  (oh yeah.   i’m feeling it.   listened to some clapton today.   i can do this.   i’m gonna do this.  4 to 1 )

  7. using some vacation time to go to the san diego padres spring training camp in peoria, arizona.   (what was i thinking?  i can’t leave during our mexico mission trip season.   dang.   then again…tony gwynn could send me a ticket.  there’s always hope.   300 to 1)

  8. starting a “bring-in-n-out-burgers-to-lewisville” lobby group.   (me?  probably a  75 to 1 longshot.   wanda on the other could win you some big bucks.  she’s definitely a 3 to 1 on this one.)

  9. adopting a really opinionated position on end times.   ( no way.  no how.   no reason to do it.   too alienating.   to divisive.   too pointless.   i’ll leave it for seminary students,  preachers of big churches,  authors of nifty christian fiction,  and television christians.  500,000 to 1 )

  10. stop staying up so late.   (ouch.  this one should be a lock, but its not.   i’ve got staying up late in my blood.   but i’m still not throwing in the cards.   100 to 1 )

  11. starting a hobby. i’ve never had a hobby.   i think it would sound really cool to say, “this ____ is my hobby”…   (this one actually has a chance.   does driving off-road in a jeep fall into a “hobby” catagory?   10 to 1 )

  12. twittering.   i can actually see some value in it.   ( i know i would start twittering if i had a some kind of a smartphone and mobile internet.  not sure i will do it faithfully until that happens.  still thinking about it, though.  probably no better than 7 to 1 odds.)

  13. getting a mac.   i’m into my fourth year and  i still love my sony vaio and will keep using it until it flatlines.   but what to do when that day comes?  i’m torn.   (sheesh.  this one is really tough.  and i’m probably going to have to decide this year.   today?  i’m definitely leaning towards a mac.   this could be as high as 3 to 1 )

  14. completely redoing the master bathroomthe term “master bath” is kind of a joke in the farra crib…four and a half feet wide by five feet long…it’s more like a closet with a toilet.  (this is going to happen.  get your money to the window.  1 to 1 )

  15. becoming a texas rangers fan.   (because of my disdain for american league baseball, i will never be a true fan of an american league team.  no other team will ever rival my loyalty for the great padre organization.   no team will ever come close.   but i have found myself feeling the pain of the ranger apologists and even identifying with their angst.  i have become a huge fan of michael young,  josh hamilton,  david murphy,  elvis andrus and the young pitching staff.   i will always believe that one of the greatest moments in baseball history was nolan ryan  smacking robin ventura around.   the odds are still pretty high…maybe 20 to 1…but they might drop significantly during the spring.)

  16. buying a suit(i hate that this topic even has to come upthe likelihood of this one happening is pretty high, simply because of the numbers of weddings i do…and will continue to do in the future.   that minister thing really gets in the way sometimes…  odds?  probably close to a 4 to 1 )

  17. writing a book(sounds cool, but it’s not in the cards.   i am currently writing down everything i know about youth ministry that i’ve learned over the past 37 years.   not sure anyone but wanda would buy it, though.   i would make logan buy it, come to think of it.   online book version?  6 to 1. print version?  300 to 1 )

there you have it.

i better not hear of you getting a ticket on your way to vegas…
