We’ve come a long way

Writer's picture: Mark RoseMark Rose

this morning in my sermon i’m going to preach from a parable of jesus where he talks about the ten virgins (or bridesmaids).  the story is a simple one.  half of the bridesmaids had enough oil to keep their torches burning as they waited for the groom to come…the other half didn’t and their torches burnt out.  because they were out trying to buy more oil, they missed the groom’s entrance and, thus, missed the wedding ceremony also.

i guess you’ll just have to be there this morning if you want to get the application.  that’s not the point of this post, tho.

growing up in the church, i was one of those rebellious youth who thought that everything needed to change.  i was a teenager when rock and roll music began to flex it’s muscle in the music of the church.  boy, was i a happy guy!  out with the organ!  in with the guitars!  out with the hymns!  in with cool songs!  out with the ancient!  in with the modern!  “things are going to change now”, was our cry.

our new music was going to stir the soul.  our new music was going to lift hearts and change lives.  it’s power was going pierce people to the core.  we were never going to be the same.

today, buzzy is going to sing one of the new songs that was the clarion call of a new generation.

i’m pumped.

…and anxious to see if you are as moved by it today as i was in 1967.

can’t wait to hear your comments.

(if you’re not at north point this sunday, i’ll let you in on it in a day or two…)
