Trees

Writer's picture: Mark RoseMark Rose

seems like an odd dialogue i’m having with myself this morning.

“should i write about donald miller’s benediction at the democratic national convention last night?  should i write about the substance of his prayer or the fact that he was invited to pray at all?  should i write about the political climate of our country and whether or not a prayer at the dnc had any integrity at all?  should i write about whether i could have given a prayer at the dnc or whether i would have if i were asked?“or should i write about the trees in my yard?”

i think i’ll write about the trees.

have i ever told you that i have fifteen trees on my property?  fifteen!  if you count the three trees on my neighbor’s property that grow more on my property than his, i have eighteen!  eighteen trees.  and the best part?  all but two of them drop leaves.  yeah, i love the fall in lewisville…

if i would have acted on impulse today, i would have cut them all down.  all of them.  they keep my grass from growing.  they promote the proliferation of weeds.  they have contributed to the early wear on my roof.  they plugged up my gutters and ruined them.  they create a jungle down the side of my house.  at least four of my days in the fall and winter are devoted to raking, picking up, bagging and hauling leaves.  i don’t even want to tell you what it’s like if it rains before i can get the leaves picked up!  and i haven’t even told you worst part…

nine of the fifteen trees drop nuts.  thousands of acorns and pecans most every year.  this year was particularly good/bad for pecans.  the good?  we have buckets and buckets of pecans.  great for eating.  bad for shelling.  but overall, a plus.  the real bad?  there was no way we could keep up with picking them all up, so the shells went deep into soil, contaminated it with toxins, and now my front lawn looks like a pasture.  me?  bitter?  no way…

how can something so beautiful as a tree produce such misery?

mmmm…i wonder if god ever thinks the same thing about people?
