Towards deeper leadership

Writer's picture: Mark RoseMark Rose

i was having a conversation with an old friend today and we were talking about leadership in the church.   we agreed that men place incredible pressure on each other to “prove” their worth in leadership.   i guarantee you that when a group of pastors get together (a group i usually try to avoid),  conversation will invariably turn to:

  1. how big our attendance is…

  2. how big our budgets are…

  3. how big our growth plan is…

  4. how big our staff is…

  5. how big our dreams are…

  6. how big our programs are…

  7. how big our territory is…

  8. how big our blessing from god is…

sorry,  but you’d think we were all still in a high school boys locker room.

the older i get and the longer i watch church culture from the cheap seats (especially the affluent,  american church culture),  the more i am fascinated by our infatuation with expansion.

i would be the last guy in the world to devalue the need and call to disciple the nations.    i pretty much believe the practical goal of the church is to produce more followers of christ…and deeper followers of chirst.   i’m all over the primacy of leading people to jesus,  as a matter of first importance.

but we just have to remember that our worth is not measure by size.   our worth as a church is measured by our conformity to the character and example of jesus.   our worth as leaders is measured by the influence we leverage because of our servant hearts.   our worth as disciples is measured by the cross.

all other measurements of worth…and effectiveness… are questionable,  at best.
