The best we offer

we are imperfect people.   face it.   we fall short…not just of the glory of god,  as the apostle paul would say…but of the expectations of people.   not to mention our own expectations…

some of us try hard.   some say they are giving their best,  but are just fooling themselves.   some are erratic.   others put out such a poor effort,  it’s hardly worth recognizing.

this may not be the most profound thing i have ever written,  but it may come close.   when everything is stripped away… i mean right down to the basics…all we really have to offer is our word.   are we people who do what we say?

how about you?

is your word good? do you do what you say you’re going to do? can people count on you? when you make promises, do you keep them? do you pay attention to the details? are you trustworthy? are you dependable? do people rely on your commitments? are you faithful in little things,  as well as big things?

this is always a battle for me.   i’m a people helper.   i’m humbled that god has given me this job to do with my life.   but with it comes the task of doing what i say i’m going to do.

“you can count on me.”   “i’ll be there for you.” “i’ll make sure that happens.”   “don’t worry.”   “trust me.”   “i’ll help you.”   “my word is good.”

these aren’t just casual phrases.   they are defining statements.   they explain who we are.   they paint the most vivid picture of our essence.

do you make them?   do you keep them?

it’s the best you have to offer.
