i read recently that there are more licensed vehicles in the united states than there are licensed drivers. i have grown up in the era where the accumulation of more and more stuff was defined as “the american way”. i can see the good and the bad.
obviously, modern technology and living in the most economically prosperous country on earth has provided me with a lot of pretty cool stuff over the course of my life. i’m not complaining. i’ve spent significant time in some other countries…especially among the poor…and i gotta tell you, the invention of the window air conditioning unit is pure brilliance! especially in the great state.
but the older i get, the more i see the damage. it is mind boggling to consider the amount of resources that are tied up in owning, operating, repairing, running, storing, insuring and disposing of the stuff we accumulate. on top of that, it blows me away to think of some of the other cost.
the cost to our hearts.
because we are so busy taking care of our things, we don’t have time for relationships. keeping our stuff running and paid for takes the full attention of our priority time. there is diverted affection. there are the demands of focus. there is divided loyalty.
jesus said we cannot serve two masters. yeah, right. we’re going down trying to prove him wrong.
