wanda and i made our christmas break pilgrimage to the in and out shrine in frisco yesterday, for a little taste of socal for the holidays.
while we were there, we stopped by a local christian bookstore so wanda could buy next year’s christmas cards at half off… ever the thrifty shopper she is.
going to a christian bookstore is always an adventure in attitude for me. lots of great books to feed the soul and enrich the mind. i wish i had the money to buy all the books i want.
that’s the good part of the adventure. the frustrating part usually involves the abundance of christian stuff for sale… because, apparently, christians don’t have enough important stuff to spend their money on. no. i guess our lives are not going to be complete without christian erasers, christian t-shirts, christian breath mints, christian coffee mugs, christian picture frames, or christian shoe laces.
it’s no wonder the unbelieving public struggles to understand us. sometimes i think we christians need a total image makeover. maybe we could spend our money more wisely by hiring a chic new york city image makeover consultant. surely they could come up with something better than christian shoe laces?
anyway, in the midst of my cynical stroll through the christian mini-mall, i made my way back to the church growth and leadership section. back to the meat and potatoes. no more fluff. and there i found it.

the usher’s book…creating a welcoming and safe environment for worship.
we sooo need this book.
if we had ushers.
then we could get name badges.
and i’m pretty much guessing the way that ushers create a safe environment is if they are packing.
mmm. maybe that’s how we could get ushers.
hey marshall! i’ve got a job for you and jackson…
but you’ve gotta read the book first.
