this week, the most well-known national publication on christian leadership is devoting its journal to the topic of the pastor’s authority.
actually, i’ve been reading a lot lately about the pastor’s authority. it’s a hot topic. there’s a huge movement in the church these days that is built on the idea that jesus had absolute authority…and he passed that authority on to the disciples…and the disciples passed that authority on elders/pastors…and according to scripture, those elders/pastors are to have authority over the church:
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Hebrews 13:17
the thinking goes like this: since jesus had all the authority…and he gave that authority to church leaders…as long as pastors and elders are speaking the words of jesus, then we have “spiritual authority” over the lives of people in our churches and they need to obey what we say, since we are saying what jesus would be saying if he were here.
what say you? i’ll comment if you do…
