“pastor mike, pastor mike…” – four

when peter wrote the following words, it was shocking…preposterous…revolutionary:

As you come to him, the living Stone–rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him– you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:4-5, 9

we have no idea how outrageous these words must have seemed to first century followers of christ.  these people understood the role of the priests…the high and holy men of god who were set apart…unlike regular folks.

but peter set a new plan in motion.  he didn’t abolish the priesthood, he just redefined it.  the holy things of god still needed to be handled.  the sacred still needed to proclaimed.  people still needed to connect to the almighty.  but the responsibility was no longer reserved for the elite.  it was no longer the job of the spiritually superior.  it now belonged to everyone who came by faith.  it now belongs to us.

all of us.
