not that the fate of the world hangs on this discussion, but i need to make a comment about this brett favre soap opera.
for the uninitiated, brett favre is the future hall of fame quarterback of the minnesota vikings professional football team. sort of.
after many years of lighting things up as the QB of the green bay packers, brett retired…then unretired…then wanted to come back to the packers (after they told him they really didn’t want him anymore)…then got himself traded to the new york jets two years ago.
then he retired. again. sort of.
after holing up at home in mississippi during the off-season, he started dancing again…talking about the possibility of un-retiring. maybe he would come back. maybe not. maybe to this team. maybe to that team. or not. the media had a field day. fans trashed him. he was vilified in the press. ultimately, he signed a major-lucrative contract with the hated vikings, the long-time nemesis of green bay…a two-year, $25 million mega deal!
after an incredible season…at 41 years old…he retired. again. sort of.
as the 2010 football season starts to heat up, favre is at it again. maybe he’ll come back. maybe he won’t. maybe he’ll skip the whole pre-season. maybe not. maybe he’ll go on injured reserved. maybe not. maybe he’ll play just 10-12 games this season (instead of the 22 or 23 a playoff team plays).
so here’s what i’m thinking tonight. today, the minnesota vikings…whom he’s already under contract to for $13 million this season…sweetened the deal by offering him $3 million more for this season…and…the potential for $4 million more if certain incentives are met. $7 million more, just for shrugging his shoulders and saying, “uhhh, i’m not sure.”
and the people say: diva…self-centered bas***d…evil role model…horrible team player…greedy…narcissist.
i say: absolute brilliance. genius of the highest order. $7 million for doing nothing? a truly inspired accomplishment!
