hard work

Writer's picture: Mark RoseMark Rose

the past couple of days,  we’ve been working pretty hard getting the north point kid’s building remodeled and prepped for new carpet.   lots of lifting and carrying…installing and finishing drywall…painting… climbing…scraping…you name it.

…but most people call it manual labor.

i’ve had some stretches of my life where manual labor was what i did,  but for the most part,  my hands have spent more time writing than gripping an impact driver…and my back has been used more for shouldering problems,  than hoisting drywall above my head.

so when i get the joy of returning to the manual labor work force,  my body usually screams back at me,  “…really?  what are you thinking?”   that…and  “don’t you realize you’re 57?”

anyway,  here’s a shout out for those who work hard with their hands and shoulders and lower backs and hamstrings everyday.

it’s honorable work.   it takes skill and heart and determination.    to give sweat effort is the backbone of any culture.   yeah,  we need white collars and pencil pushers and decision makers.   the backbone can’t really do it’s job well without those people.   but let’s don’t ever forget…

manual labor is sacred.   it’s close to the heart of god.   it’s humble.   it’s creative.   often,  it’s true service on which everything else rests.   those who do it deserve our gratitude.   we would not have the lives we live without them.

so to those who lift and drill and shovel and carry and swing…thanks.
