Going off-road…the weekly 4×4

Writer's picture: Mark RoseMark Rose

1.   a couple of months ago,  i openly declared that i thought that casey and haley were the two most talented performers in the final 11 of  american idol.   i was bummed that casey went home so early,  but most of the people who voted were clueless about his musical greatness.   jazz is not all the rage in pop culture.   i was doubly bummed that haley was voted off this past week.   as good as lauren and scotty are,  haley was the one with killer vocals.   she does things that nobody but casey was able to do.    she was the only one that i always looked forward to hearing…nobody was in her league when it came to vocal creativity.

2.   my eyesight is getting worse.   ugh.

3.   i hate being reminded that i’m not perfect.   i already know i’m not.   i fully let go of my messiah complex years ago.   the mistakes i make everyday are enough to fill up the memory on my new ipad.   i just hate being reminded of it.   i hate falling short.   i hate letting people down.   i hate being part of the reason that people struggle.   look,  it’s tough handing back the robe and crown…

4.   so no judgment day?   i sooo love adding these whack jobs to the ever-growing list of excuses people will use for questioning the integrity of biblical faith.   did you see the news piece on the dallas  area atheist group that was celebrating judgment day with a big picnic?   great coverage.   glad this is over until october.

1.   i ate the best of burgers in texas and  california within 16 hours last week.   second trip to in and out…this time it was hot and fresh within 40 minutes…for dinner on thursday night and the half-pound “southbound burger” (guacamole, bacon, and monterey jack ) at burgers and brats in highland village.   amazing.   but i gotta stop this eating plan and find a new one.   soon.

2.   with all the rain,  my front lawn is starting to grow.   i am determined.

3.   one of the greatest joys i am experiencing right now is being able to see some marriages overcome obstacles,  but have remained committed to seeing their partnerships grow stronger and deeper.   there are few things in life that are better than this.

4.   i’m loving this sermon series on romans 12:1-2.   today was especially cool to be able to study about conforming to culture.   the deception and influence of culture is powerful…and it is incredible to realize that the words of the apostle paul are just as relevant…just as demanding…just as life-changing today as they were the day the believers in rome heard them in the first century.   now it’s time to obey them.
