Going off-road…the weekly 4×4

Writer's picture: Mark RoseMark Rose

1.   so i’ve got this really cool free-standing,  wood-burning stove that was given to me by a friend.   it’s brand new.    the tejas weather has been freeze-your-butt cold for the past few weeks… with more to come in the weeks ahead.   and i don’t have the time or money to install it.   urgh.   it’s going to make a pretty nice end table, tho…

2.   i don’t like the jets,  the steelers,  the packers,  or the bears.    so it was not much of a football watching day for this bitter charger fan.    and i’m still sore over losing brady hoke to the corn and blue.

3.   i am really struggling with trying to find a good time to work out these days.   can’t blame this one on getting older.   unfortunately,  the will has no age.   i love mondays.

4.   this morning during my sermon,  there was a bittersweet moment.   when i was talking about my desire to be part of a church that didn’t hurt people,  there were so many people who nodded in agreement,  i took an extra breath.   the church should not inflict pain the way it does.   it’s good to be part of a church family that values grace and healing.

1.   six months ago,  if you would have told me that i was going to be waking up at 5:45 three mornings a week to have breakfast with three different groups of north point men,  i would have accused you of being as loony as jerruh jones.    but i love it.   one of the best parts of my week.

2.   can’t believe i’m not getting any props for the san diego state basketball team.   20-0.   ranked #6 in the nation.   it might not last forever,  but it’s nice to get some national pub for once.   it’s tough being one of the 13 aztec fans in the great state,  but i will carry the banner high.

3.   been making a bunch of new connections on facebook this weekend.   i’ve actually got over my fear of being rejected by people i ask to be my friend.   it’s not so bad.   my stupid dogs actually reject me every now and then, also.

4.   it was an absolutely great day for north point.   i know this is supposed to be a 4×4,  but i need to list some reasons why:

  1. “full house sunday”  was actually full!   it was awesome to see standing room only in the building during the 11:15 hour.

  2. the 10:00 hour was packed, also.   pretty encouraging to know that many people wanted to hear a sermon,  when they could get a legit reason to blow it off…without any guilt…for a sunday!

  3. it’s always a good day when we have food in the lobby.   angie and dale are the bomb.   yeah,  i said that…

  4. for the record,  i love preaching to our youth group.   they’re young,  but they hang with me as good as any kids ever have.   watching them grow up in the faith is pretty cool.

  5. i love singing together as a family.   there are so many things i appreciate about our band,  but the best part is that they are exactly the same people up in front…when everybody is looking…as they are when we’re  sitting around eating a burger or sharing stories.   honesty is a good thing.

  6. we had new people who joined with us today.   even though they stumbled in on a reeaaalllly different kind of sunday,  they were both gracious and encouraging as they told me how much they appreciated being with us.   i hope we see them again.

  7. there’s just something about the whole family sharing communion all together once in a while.   it’s was such a profound moment of unity for me.

  8. i love having all the kids in the room.   i love the noise and clamor they create.   jack was awesome.

  9. lots of excitement about starting the radical experiment next week.   i’m really pumped about this and can’t wait to see how god turns us inside out over the next couple of months.

  10. it was great having adam back in the house.   i think we may be seeing him every week.

  11. it was beyond awesome having susan back with us,  after months in the hospital.   you didn’t get to see the looks on craig and susan’s faces that i did.   amazing.   today was a moment they had been looking forward to for a long time.

  12. lots and lots of people shared lunch together.   it wasn’t a perfect plan, tho.   we had a few people who ended up eating alone.   we will fix that for the next time around.

  13. tonight was the first night of the north point winter bowling league.   it was a very cool night.   a bunch of bowlers.   a number of other people hanging out.   good trash talking.

like i said,  it was a very good day.
