gimme a break

on the news tonight,  they told the story of a high school senior in a small, texas community.

the day before the incident,  the boy’s father (a decorated, retired fire fighter) had used his son’s pick-up truck to go hunting.   the next morning,  the boy drove to school and during a random parking lot check,  a police dog apparently smelled something in the truck that was suspicious.

when the campus police searched the boy’s truck,  they found a pistol underneath the bench seat.   because the school has a “no-tolerance” rule regarding hand guns on school property,  the boy has been suspended from school indefinitely.

the problem is the gun was the father’s.   he had accidently left his gun there after his hunting trip the day before.   in spite of the explanation (by a good man,  known and respected in the community),  the school board remains unfazed.

there was a school board meeting tonight and it has been passed on for a private hearing with the school superintendent on april 2.   meanwhile,  it will have been over three weeks since the boy has been in classes…pitched for his school’s baseball team…hung out with his classmates at school…and enjoyed the fruits of his last days in high school.

by all accounts,  he is a great kid from a good family.   he was being looked at by a couple of small colleges for a possible baseball scholarship.   he has no history of trouble at all.

i’m deeply aware of the dangers of weapons in the hands of kids.   i’m a “zero-tolerance” kind of guy.

but this is stupid.   sometimes grace and logic have to win out over rules and policies.   there is time for black and white.   there is also time for gray.

give this kid his life back, for crying out loud.

you can check out the story right here.
