An explanation…

it’s possible that you may have said to yourself,  “hey,  i’ve been a facebook friend with farra for a while.   but i’ve never seen a wall post.   ever.   in fact,  maybe he’s just a stalker.   maybe he’s one of those creepy guys that lurk around.   why has he gone public…now?”

let me explain.

i’ve been blogging for the past four years.   it started as a way to renew my discipline of journalling that i had slowly stopped during the past decade.   i didn’t write for anybody else.   my blog was public,  but nobody knew i was writing.   it was just a way of recording what i was experiencing on my journey.

in the early days of blogging,  i started to develop a desire to record some things down for my boys…lessons i had learned…ethics and ideals we had taught them…values that were uniquely farra.   for posterity.   for family history.   my blog became a place for that to happen.

then a couple of years ago,  i began to realize that my blog could be a really good way of continuing the dialogue with my church family the other six days of the week.   i added an element of teaching.   it became a place to expand on my sermon or give some deeper insights from my personal study.   it definitely turned into a pretty cool way to stay connected.

recently,  some facebookers started pestering me to link my blog to facebook because they were too dysfunctionally connected to FB to get off of it long enough to check their email or,  god forbid,  go to my blog directly.   so i caved under pressure and linked it.   you know who you are…

now,  if you are a facebooker, you are force-fed what i write.   sorry.   i’ll never know it if you hide me…or blow me away permanently.   no hard feelings here.   but if you are new to my blog and choose to keep reading it,  let me say that i’m pretty humbled that you want to read it.   so let me give you a little insight that might help you make some sense of what you read.

first – i still write primarily to connect to my church family.   some things may sound exclusive.   there ‘s probably some insider language that won’t make sense.   don’t sweat it.   if you are a complete newbie,  that means north point…a small (less than 250) group of people in lewisville, texas…a community on the north side of the dallas metroplex.   you can check out our website if your curiosity gets the best of you.

for now,  let’s just say we are kind of a renegade group of misfits that probably wouldn’t make it very well in one of the big dog churches.   we fly way under the radar that tracks the church growth scene.   we make our home in old town lewisville…a mixture of urban,  low-income,  at-risk,  multi-ethnic,  industrial,  high-end community development,  old money,  and rich history.   doing church here is a continual learning experience.   we keep having new folks join us every week,  so our title of  “the slowest growing church in the metroplex” is probably in jeopardy….

second – there are some topics that occur pretty regularly.   “marriage tuesday” is a feature that comes up every week.   the same is true for “going off-road…the weekly 4×4”, some random thoughts about the past week.   i write a lot about my off-center perspective on pastoring and church leadership.   very few things are off-limits.

we regularly wander into the world of sports and money and sex and music and parenting and pop culture and theology and ethics.   the great california – texas debate will always surface.   i generally stay away from politics.   way too divisive…too hard for people to remain civil.

third – as best i can tell by analytics,  there are about 350-400 people who read my blog regularly.   still blows me away!   nothing like some of the national bloggers,  but scary-humbling for this old dude.   don’t be afraid to make comments.   don’t be a wiener.   the broader the dialogue,  the more we learn.   if you say something stupid,  you’ll probably get called out.   but that’s no big deal,  because nobody’s gonna know you anyway.   it’s the ultimate in church anonymity!

there you have it.   now you can go back to checking your facebook.
